Welcome to the Faculty Resources page!

What is community-engaged scholarship? Watch this short video recorded by Michelle Caswell, Special Advisor to the EVCP on Community-Engaged Research. In it, she defines community-engaged scholarship, discusses principles for building partner relationships, and recommends ways to begin your journey as a community-engaged scholar.

Click here for a resource document for instructors utilizing the UCLA Community-Engaged Course Framework designation (XP suffix). UCLA’s approach to community-engaged teaching and learning draws heavily on the Carnegie Foundation’s definition of community engagement as: “…teaching, learning, and scholarship that engages faculty, students, and community in mutually beneficial and respectful collaboration. Their interactions address community identified needs, deepen students’ civic and academic learning, enhance community well-being, and enrich the scholarship of the institution.”

Relationships with Faculty and Students Community partners highlighted the central importance of building relationships with both faculty members and students. The most successful community-campus partnerships, defined by community partner satisfaction with the partnership experience, were those that had a positive relationship with the course faculty member and with the students.

Tenure and Promotion Resources for Community-Engaged Scholars

As of January 26, 2024, the Council on Academic Personnel (CAP) issued a Guidance on Community-Engaged Scholarship. The guidance addresses the defining characteristics of community-engaged scholarship, and encourages:

- candidates for personnel actions and their departments … to include information that can provide contexts for, and insights into, the intellectual significance of their community-engaged research or scholarship. Information on related contributions to teaching, service and EDI efforts, where appropriate, would also assist the university’s review process.

The guidance goes on to detail the types of information that would be helpful to include, addressing excellence and impact of the work in non-academic settings. The guidance also encourages the inclusion of non-academic peer reviewers.

In 2019 UCLA’s Center for Community Engagement designed a research project to understand the quality and impact of UCLA’s community-campus partnerships. The goal of the study was to foster more community-engaged courses that benefit our community partners and the communities they serve as much as the courses benefit our students. Community Engagement Publishing Opportunities

Special Issue “New Trends in Community-Engaged Research: Co-Producing Knowledge for Justice”

There is an exciting resurgence in critical public scholarship: a push for universities to reach beyond their academic audiences and build stronger partnerships with community-based organizations and others to address pressing social issues (Burawoy 2006, Hartmann 2017). A particularly rich vein of engaged scholarship is the involvement of students and community partners as equal knowledge producers. The special issue brings together university scholars, community-based practitioners and researchers, and undergraduate and graduate students to highlight new trends in community-based research. The articles center community-engaged work on justice-related issues such as: immigrant rights, housing, labor, education, and schools – magnifying the multiple assets and collective power that diverse scholars and community-based practitioners bring to collective approaches, particularly in growing urban spaces. The special issue will be split into two sections: articles about the *process* of conducting community-engaged scholarship – it’s theory, methods, epistemology, ethics; and articles drawing *from* community engaged research projects.

Place-based Justice Network: The Place-Based Justice Network (PBJN) is a learning community committed to transforming higher education and our communities by deconstructing systems of oppression through place-based community engagement.
Talloires Network of Engaged Universities: growing global coalition of university presidents, vice-chancellors and rectors in 78 countries who have publicly committed to strengthening the civic roles and social responsibilities of their institutions. It is the largest international network focused particularly on university civic engagement.
